King of Swords Tarot Card Meaning
Minor Arcana · Swords · King
Keywords: authority, truth, logic, ethics, mental clarity
Upright meaning
The highest authority of the intellect — clarity, ethics, and truth wielded with power and precision.
The King of Swords sits rigidly upright on his throne, sword pointing directly upward — the embodiment of the highest principles of the intellect: truth, clarity, justice, and ethical authority. He is the judge, the doctor, the barrister, the scientist — someone who uses the power of mind and the authority of expertise in service of what is genuinely right and true. When this King appears, it is a call to lead with clarity, to cut through confusion with intellectual precision, and to commit absolutely to truth and ethical action — no matter the personal cost.
Reversed meaning
Abuse of authority, cold logic without compassion, or manipulative use of intelligence.
Reversed, the King of Swords abuses his authority — using intelligence to manipulate rather than to illuminate, exercising power without ethical grounding, or wielding the sword of truth purely as a weapon of domination. Cold, calculating, and divorced from empathy, this reversed King is someone to be wary of — or a pattern in yourself to honestly examine.
In love
A partner who thinks clearly, communicates directly, and brings honesty and intellectual depth to the relationship. Truth and clarity are the foundation of this love.
A controlling or manipulative partner who uses intelligence as a tool of domination, or cold intellectual detachment preventing genuine intimacy.
In career
The highest professional authority — a role requiring extraordinary intellectual clarity, ethical decision-making, and the ability to cut through complexity to reach truth.
Abuse of professional authority, manipulative use of expertise, or ruthless ambition unconstrained by ethics.
Spiritual meaning
The highest use of the mind is in service of truth. When the King of Swords is fully integrated, intellectual brilliance and spiritual integrity become one and the same.
